about ABOUT AMAATI COMPANY, AMAATI FONIO

Who We AreAbout AMAATI Company Limited

AMAATI is a Ghanaian social enterprise that pioneered the revival of Fonio in Northern Ghana. An Enterprise that works with farmers, particularly women in producing and processing Fonio. The enterprise was formed with an idea of creating sustainable livelihood for women farmers whose lands are degraded due to their excessive usage and creating land management systems where the lands can be regenerated and used to grow Fonio and other crops.

We Revive Fonio in Northern Ghana on degraded/abandoned lands that have been exhaustively used. We started with ten (10) landless women in the 2014 production season and today we work with over 2000 farmers.

AMAATI generates a high social impact through the continued empowerment and support of rural female farmers. We provide a path out of poverty and inequality by providing skills training and income generation to women in the Northern region of Ghana.

Our Mission

To build sustainable communities through the use of Fonio, which nourishes the land, people and society

Our Strategy

Our passion to achieve and promote sustainable production and consumption of Fonio for global nutrition has motivated these 4 key pillars:

1. Build Capacity Of Women To Produce Fonio

AMAATI has built the capacity of over 3000 farmers, 80% are women to produce Fonio. We support these women to reduce hunger and poverty whiles improving household nutrition.

We focused more on sustainable agriculture and livelihoods which ensures long-term agricultural activities as well as healthy agro-ecosystems with minimal inputs for crop productivity.

2. Fonio Production

DIM Fonio is a product sourced for its high-quality standards. We produce Fonio under strict hygienic conditions that meet both local and international standards. We are certified by Ghana Food and Drugs Authority and Ghana Standards Authority.

3. Promote Sustainable Production

AMAATI will continue to revive and add value to crops that are sustainably grown, adds value to the environment, and keep rural communities resilient.

4. Stakeholder Engagement

AMAATI has engaged stakeholders in the food chain to develop models that are adaptive to our food system and promote sustainable consumption in Ghana.

We have collaborated with government institutions, researchers, NGOs, IGO’s, public and private institutions to build a community, where people can thrive on indigenous foods that are already existing in their food basket and do not disrupt the environment.

Our Sustainable Development Goals

1. Climate Action

The enterprise has ensured that women and men, including the most vulnerable groups, become more resilient, able to better deal with climate shocks and/or are better able to make use of climate change induced opportunities.

The rehabilitation of the degraded lands involves water and land management, disaster risk reduction, agriculture and social development and health, which have significant co-benefits in terms of adapting to climate change.

2. Gender Equality

The enterprise ensures that women benefit equally with men from the activities although they did not have access to land. Provide training that is not often available or accessible to women to help them advance in the public domain or workplace. We address limited rights to land, property, credit, natural resources that hinder sustainable development for them and the community at large.

3. No Zero Hunger

Fonio supplies food to several million people during the most difficult months of the year (from April to July) every year when other food resources are scarce, their involvement with AMAATI will motivate these farmers to increase yields through our capacity building programs to implement good farming practices. This will increase the percentage of Fonio for family consumption, increase their access to food and reduce hunger, especially the most difficult months of the year

4. No Poverty

AMAATI continues support to farmers, especially landless women in vulnerable rural communities to grow Fonio will significantly increase incomes and transform their lives through their continued trading relationship with AMAATI. This will reduce their poverty levels and grow their communities.

5. Responsible Consumption

We promote the production of Fonio on degraded lands without fertilizer application, to regenerate depleted soils. This production model creates room for future generations to benefit. We are mindful of the environment as such all practices are drawn from sustainable sources. We work with stakeholders to ensure consumption decisions are based on consumption models that are sustainable.
